Provides a consistent base, simplifies logistics, and allows for an easy departure the next day.

If you have your own transport and prefer a city over nature for Day 2, you can drive to Prizren (1.5 hrs from Pristina). Spend the day exploring its impressive Ottoman-era old town, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, and the Kalaja fortress for incredible sunset views over the city.

Practical Information

Getting Around

For Day 1, everything in Pristina is easily walkable. For Day 2, you have two main options: 1) Hire a taxi for the day (negotiate a fixed price for ~6-8 hours, approx $80-100). This is the most straightforward. 2) Rent a car in Pristina for flexibility (~$40-50/day). Driving is manageable; main roads are good. Buses to Peja are cheap but infrequent and won't get you to the canyon trailheads easily.

Book Ahead

Accommodation in Pristina should be booked ahead, on weekends. Car rental should also be reserved in advance.

Packing Essentials

Comfortable walking shoes (essential for hiking in Rugova), layers for changeable mountain weather, a scarf/shawl for women to cover shoulders/knees when visiting religious sites, power adapter (Type C/F), and cash (Euros are widely used).

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in a hostel in Pristina. Use intercity buses to get to Peja for Day 2, then take a local taxi from Peja bus station to the Rugova Canyon area (shorter, cheaper trip). For lunch, grab a burek (savory pie) from a bakery. Skip the cable car and just enjoy the free hiking trails.

Luxury Upgrade

Stay at the 5-star Swiss Diamond Hotel in Pristina. Hire a private driver/guide for both days for smooth, insightful travel. Book a table at the upscale 'Liburnia' or 'Pishat' for dinners. In Rugova, arrange a guided hiking tour tailored to your fitness level and consider a gourmet picnic lunch prepared by your hotel.

Family-Friendly

Focus more on Prizren for Day 2 instead of Rugova hiking. Its flat, pedestrian-friendly old town, fortress (a fun climb for older kids), and riverfront are more accessible. In Pristina, the NEWBORN monument is a great photo spot, and the Ethnographic Museum's traditional houses are engaging. Simplify meals with pizza or pasta options available at most restaurants.
