Practical Information
Getting Around
Kosovo is best explored by a combination of private transport and public buses. Rent a car for maximum flexibility, especially for days 2-5 when visiting remote natural sites (expect $25-35 daily). Otherwise, intercity buses connect Pristina, Peja, and Prizren reliably and cheaply ($3-8 per journey). Within cities, taxis are affordable ($2-5 for most trips) and walking covers most attractions. Book buses in advance during summer. For mountain excursions, arrange transport through your accommodation or hire drivers for day trips ($40-60). Roads are generally good on main routes but can be rough in mountains.
Book Ahead
Kosovo is wonderfully spontaneous—advance bookings are rarely essential. However, book accommodation 1-2 weeks ahead during summer (July-August) when diaspora returns and Prizren fills up. Reserve a guide for Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park hiking through your Peja accommodation. If renting a car, book online before arrival for better rates. No tickets needed for attractions as most are free or pay-on-arrival. Restaurant reservations are unnecessary except during the Dokufest film festival in Prizren (August).
Packing Essentials
Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets and hiking boots for mountain days, layers for variable mountain weather, modest clothing for monastery visits (covered shoulders and knees), swimwear for waterfalls in summer, light jacket for caves and cool evenings, sunscreen and hat, reusable water bottle, power adapter (European two-pin), small daypack for excursions, and some cash euros as backup
Total Budget
$400-550 for the week (excluding international flights)
Customize Your Trip
Budget Version
Cut costs by staying in hostels ($10-15 per night) throughout, eating at local bakeries and self-catering when possible, using only public buses instead of taxis or car rental, skipping guided tours in favor of self-guided hikes with downloaded maps, staying with families through homestay networks in Peja and Prizren, and bringing picnic lunches for day trips. Total budget can drop to $35-45 daily while maintaining the same route and major experiences.
Luxury Upgrade
Upgrade to boutique hotels in restored historic buildings in Prizren and Peja ($80-120 per night), hire a private driver-guide for the entire week for comfort and deeper insights ($150-200 daily), dine at the finest restaurants featuring modern interpretations of traditional cuisine with wine pairings, arrange private guided hikes with gourmet picnics in the mountains, add a helicopter tour over the national parks, stay at a mountain resort in Bjeshkët e Nemuna, and include spa treatments in Pristina.
Family-Friendly
Base yourselves in just two locations (Pristina and Prizren) to minimize packing and unpacking, focus on shorter nature walks rather than challenging hikes, spend more time at Mirusha Waterfalls where kids can safely swim, add the Zip Line Green Valley adventure near Peja for older children, visit Gërmia Park's swimming pools, choose family-run guesthouses with gardens, pack snacks for car journeys, allow flexible timing for rest breaks, and skip some museums in favor of outdoor exploration and gelato stops.
